My journey as a basketball player has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, filled with unforgettable achievements, painful setbacks, and valuable lessons. Basketball has shaped me in ways I never imagined.
I fell in love with basketball as a kid, drawn to its fast pace and team spirit. Through relentless practice, I earned a spot on my school team and was eventually named captain. Leading my team was an honour, but it also came with pressure—pressure to perform, to inspire, and to carry the expectations of my coaches and teammates. The responsibility fuelled my growth, pushing me to refine my skills and basketball IQ.
Facing challenges of injury and re-injury, I questioned my self-belief and was navigating through balancing my physical and mental health.
I realised then that what people don’t always see is the mental toll of being an athlete. The pressure to perform, the fear of re-injury, and the loneliness of recovery took a heavy toll on my mental health. I realized that physical training alone wasn’t enough—mental conditioning was just as crucial, but I had no help.
Today, I advocate for mental health awareness in sports. Athletes are often seen as invincible, but we’re human—prone to doubts, fears, and emotional exhaustion. Mental training should be normalized, not stigmatized. Whether it’s handling pressure, recovering from injury, or simply staying motivated, a strong mind is the foundation of success.
My journey is far from over. Every setback has been a lesson, every injury a reminder of my resilience, and every moment of self-doubt a chance to grow stronger. Basketball gave me purpose, but the battles I fought within myself taught me the true meaning of strength. To every athlete out there: train your body, but never neglect your mind. Because in the end, the toughest opponent you’ll ever face is yourself.
